A tweet chat it was,#Idecide a global campaign that advocates for increased access of contraceptives among youth especially girls/women this time around focused on providing the right information and knowledge on the proper use of Emergency contraception.

What are emergency contraceptives? These are pills and devices used to prevent unintended pregnancies which usually occur due to unprotected sexual Intercourse, condom breaking during sexual intercourse or when one forgets to use their  regular birth control method.

The pills  include;Postinor-2, Norlevo, i-Pill, and Optinor and their effectiveness is within 3 days or 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse.

The other emergency contraception is the Intrauterine Device or IUD

Furthermore, ECPs can be used in situations where a woman has been raped or defiled, when a woman miscalculated her safe days, when an IUD has come out of place, when the woman wants to avoid unintended pregnancy, among others.

Tweeps from various communities and stakeholders from across the region impacted the masses with knowledge on ECPs discussing their proper usage.

A case in point was the team of interns at RHU headquarters in Katego who proved to have dug deep into the wells of knowledge sharing figures and facts on ECPs that are beyond scrutiny.

The interns commonly referred to as “basawo” by the various communities where they have been doing outreaches together stepped up the conversation online with the tweet chat host Oyom Daniel a passionate advocate for family planning access among youth with Reproductive Health Uganda.

Existing myths and misconceptions such as; ECPs cause barrenness, cancer, among others  were busted and addressed by the tweet chat host.

They emphasized that “ECPs don’t terminate pregnancy”. ”ECPs are easy to use”. “One may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, breast tenderness, dizziness, fluid retention and irregular bleeding but however these side effects usually disappear after 1-2 days.”

Many young people today are sexually active and engage in unprotected sex thereby exposing themselves to unwanted pregnancies which they terminate in ways that aren’t safe hence unsafe abortions.

It’s therefore expedient that they are provided with such information and knowledge which empowers them to make the right choices in case they find themselves in such situations….the sooner, the better….it’s the right way! HIP HIP HOOORAYYYY!!!!
